Event highlights impact of Nancy and Lowell Lohman on diabetes care in local community

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – (February 25, 2021) —Tuesday, February 16 marked the conclusion of the inaugural Lohman Libre Challenge, an event that started on Monday, January 18. The event showcased the collaboration between Help a Diabetic Child, Abbott Laboratories, CareNow Pharmacy, Halifax Health, UF Health Endocrinology at Halifax Health and other organizations.

The premise of the Lohman Libre Challenge involves a partnership between Abbott Laboratories, CareNow Pharmacy and Help a Diabetic Child. Those who signed up for the Challenge with Diabetes received a free 14-day trial of the Abbott Libre Continuous Glucose Monitor upon registration and education offered by Abbott Laboratories. Continuous Glucose Monitoring allows  real time blood sugar level readings without a finger stick.  Participants who wore their Libre system for 14 days and completed their MyFreeStyle Training were eligible to receive a 28-day supply of Libre sensors and an Abbott Laboratories Nutrition bag for free.

Those who signed up received their supplies shipped from CareNow Pharmacy to their home to utilize the technology. While the Challenge may have kicked off virtually through sign-ups back in January, it ended with a voluntary in-person event at Halifax Health that acted as a last day for people to sign-up for the Challenge and to meet with different team members of the various organizations that participated.

In total, 221 individuals signed-up for the Challenge. Many participants noted how much the CGM helped them manage their diabetes.

Tami Balavage, President of Help a Diabetic Child, said “Help a Diabetic Child (HADC) in partnership with Halifax Health, CareNow Pharmacy, and Abbott Laboratories were extremely happy with the inaugural Lohman Libre Challenge.  This unique program allowed individuals of all ages who live with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes the opportunity to try the FreeStyle Libre Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) to assist in managing their blood glucose levels at no cost.  Our mission is to continue to work with children and adults living with diabetes in Volusia and Flagler Counties and to help insure the resources, including insulin and diabetes testing supplies necessary to survive are available to those who are in the most need due to financial difficulties. This collaboration between all of the organizations shows the diabetes care and education that is offered here locally.”
