Balance and Fall Prevention

Step Healthy - Saving Lives one step at a time

Halifax Health – Trauma Services will be holding one-hour long Fall Prevention Classes to help our local seniors and community members who are at risk of falling adhere to some best practices in fall prevention.

Falls are the leading cause of accidental death for Floridians age 55 and older, according to the most recent data.

Data released in 2017 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows nearly 3,000 adults over the age of 55 died from falling in Florida that year. Half of those deaths occurred in adults over the age of 85.

Studies show that a combination of interventions can significantly reduce falls in the older adult population. Experts recommend the following key steps to reduce the risk of falls:

  • Begin a regular exercise program
  • Make your home safer by clearing walkways and hallways
  • Have your vision checked
  • Have your health provider review your medications
