DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – (October 5, 2017) – Halifax Health – Center for Orthopedics has launched a new recovery and rehabilitation program for total knee replacement surgery patients known as E.R.A.S., an acronym for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery.  Halifax Health is the only medical facility in Volusia and Flagler counties to offer this unique program that features a multidisciplinary approach to recovery and has patients up and walking within three hours after surgery is complete.

“Studies show the earlier a patient ambulates after surgery, the better their outcome.  Our goal at Halifax Health is to have patients up and walking within three hours after surgery.  The sooner that happens the sooner we can get that patient back home to the activities he or she loves most,” explains Michelle Ransom, a registered nurse and orthopedic patient navigator for Halifax Health – Center for Orthopedics.

E.R.A.S. began as a pilot study for total knee replacements conducted by a team comprised of Halifax Health – Center for Orthopedics clinical staff.  The pilot program’s successful outcomes over a 90-day trial period consistently showed positive results for participating patients, with them able to return home 24 to 48 hours after surgery.

With E.R.A.S., patients receive exceptional care before, during and after surgery from an expert orthopedics team that utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to recovery coordinated by an orthopedic patient navigator.  Pre-operation educational classes are offered two days a week to prepare patients for their total joint replacement procedure.  Patients are provided information on how to prepare prior to surgery, what to expect when they are admitted and how to prepare for their return home.  The equipment they will need once they are home is often delivered prior to the surgery.

Beneficial outcomes for patients who have participated in the E.R.A.S. program include: less opioids needed for pain relief; no catheter needed; and up and walking within three hours after surgery is complete.

Designated a Best Hospital for Hip and Knee Replacement in Central Florida by U.S. News & World Report, Halifax Health consistently ranks among the nation’s best hospitals for orthopedic surgery care with superior outcomes in back and neck surgery, spinal fusion, hip fracture treatment, hip replacement and total knee replacement.  In addition, Halifax Health employs the area’s only orthopedic traumatologist, Todd McCall, M.D.
