Halifax Health Family Medicine Residency Program is committed to serve our community and develop physicians with skills to reduce health care disparities and cultivate a culture that promotes diversity, equity and inclusion.   Halifax Health Family Medicine Residency Program competitive scholarship program offers one to two full housing scholarships to support underrepresented in medicine (URiM) fourth year medical students during a one month externship.

URiM as defined by our Halifax Health Family Medicine Residency Program includes underrepresented race and ethnicities, LGBTQ+, students with disabilities, low socioeconomic status, first-generation to college and first generation immigrants.

Eligibility:

We are seeking highly qualified medical students in their fourth year of an LCME or AOA accredited US medical school.  

  • Must identify as URiM
  • Committed to a career in Family Medicine. 
  • Completed core MS3 curriculum prior to the clerkship (surgery, OB, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Medicine).
  • Completed USMLE or COMLEX Step 1 with a passing score.
  • Be in good academic and professional standing at the applicant’s home medical school.

To apply students will submit the following:

  • Clerkship Application
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Personal Statement describing career goals and why this clerkship and our residency program would be beneficial to your medical education/goals. (500 words)
  • One letter of recommendation from a Family Physician faculty.
  • Medical School Transcript
  • USMLE or COMLEX Step 1 transcipt
  • Headshot Photo

Program Overview

Four-week MS4 rotation in full spectrum family medicine located at Halifax Health Medical Center.   Hands-on experiences working closely with family medicine residents and faculty. 

  • Participation in morning report, didactic sessions, workshops and hospital grand rounds.
  • Outpatient and Inpatient experience in adult medicine, pediatric medicine and obstetrics.  
  • Experience overnight call system.
  • Options to tailor the rotation to the student’s interests:  sports medicine, outpatient procedures, dermascopy, GYN procedures, prenatal care, fetal ultrasound, MAT.
  • URiM resident physician mentorship
  • URiM faculty or community physician connection.  
  • Scholarly activity development that can be added to student CV:
    • Options: (Completed in partnership with resident mentor/s)
      • Didactic interesting case presentation with discussion on the disease process and treatment
      • Didactic lecture on topic regarding diversity/equity/inclusion in medicine and medical education
      • Didactic lecture on medical topic of choice
  • Participation in program and resident social events
  • Participation in any Justice, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) committee meetings or events that occur during the clerkship. 
  • Dates flexible from July through November- except blackout dates of Aug 25-28 and Oct 13-16

Clerkship Expectations:

Students will be functioning at the level of a sub-intern which will include patient care, documentation, presentation and educational components at the direction of their supervising residents and/or faculty.   Students will be provided a schedule for the duration of the clerkship that they are expected to adhere to.  If there are items in the schedule that need to be changed this must be done prior to the start of the clerkship through the program coordinator.

Interested participants should apply by completing our URiM clerkship and scholarship application.  Complete application and all supporting required documents should be mailed to the program coordinator at residency.coordinator@halifax.org

Once applications are received, the Halifax Health Residency Program Justice, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee will select the medical student scholarship winners.
