Halifax Health Medical Center has been named a Perinatal Center of Excellence by The Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare.

“Halifax Health is proud to be the first healthcare facility in Central Florida to be named a Perinatal Center of Excellence,” says Ann Martorano, chief operating officer for Halifax Health.  She adds, “This certification speaks to our continued commitment to provide the highest quality of care to mothers and babies.”

Perinatal Care Certification focuses on achieving integrated, coordinated, patient-centered care for all pregnancies and births.  The certification program uses standards, guidelines, and The Joint Commission’s perinatal care core performance measures for managing and monitoring aspects of perinatal care that are critical to improving and maintaining the health of newborns and their mothers.

Halifax Health’s Center for Women and Infant Health offers the area’s most comprehensive care from pregnancy to delivery.  The center is home to the area’s only 24-hour obstetric emergency department where expectant mothers are seen by board-certified obstetricians.  In addition, neonatologists and experienced neonatal nurses staff Halifax Health’s Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which is also open 24 hours a day and cares for babies born as early as 28 weeks.
