DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – (October 25, 2017) – Halifax Health Medical Center’s Level II Trauma Center in Daytona Beach received 12 Biketoberfest-related trauma admissions during the four-day motorcycle rally that annually draws more than 100,000 visitors to the Daytona Beach area. The trauma center saw the same number of Biketoberfest-related trauma admissions in 2016.
“We had a very busy Biketoberfest in our trauma center with 34 trauma admissions over a four-day period, 12 of which were motorcycle crashes, resulting in trauma alerts from EMS,” says Laura Wolf, trauma program manager for Halifax Health. She further explains, “When the emergency department receives a trauma alert from the field, the emergency department physician may request a trauma activation. This requires the immediate mobilization of a multidisciplinary team consisting of physicians, nurses and other allied health professionals specifically trained to provide expert rapid assessment and treatment to the complex needs of critically injured residents and visitors to Volusia County.”
During the event, Halifax Health saw 13 Biketoberfest-related trauma team activations.
The median age of patients admitted was 55 years, reflecting the upward trend of aging baby boomers who continue to participate in motorcycle events with this year’s Biketoberfest marking its 25th anniversary. Approximately 33.3 percent of the riders were reported as wearing helmets, 80 percent of those admitted were male, and 73.3 percent of those admitted lived outside of Volusia County.
