The Josephine Field Davidson Cancer Resource Library

This library is dedicated to the memory of Josephine Field Davidson (1921-1995), former editor of the Daytona Beach News-Journal and herself a cancer patient. We seek to continue Mrs. Davidson’s long-time commitment to providing accurate information, which she believed to be the highest form of community service.

The resources gathered here are available free of charge to anyone with questions about the many diseases we call cancer.

The Mission of the Josephine Field Davidson Cancer Resource Library is to serve the community by providing convenient access to current information for patients, caregivers and others with an interest in the diseases collectively known as cancer.

As the American Cancer Society tells us, “For the cancer patient, knowledge means the power to understand your specific disease and the best treatment options available. It also means taking control and learning how to deal with cancer’s devastating effects on you and your family. For the general public, knowledge means the power to make healthy lifestyle decisions so that you and your loved ones may never have to know what this disease is about.”

Library resources include pamphlets, magazines, books, audiotapes and videotapes. There is also access to information on the Internet from the nation’s most prestigious cancer databases. Topics include:

  •     Cancer statistics and risk factors
  •     Medical treatment options including clinical trials
  •     Self-care and coping skills
  •     Diet, nutrition and exercise
  •     Work and financial issues
  •     What it means to be a cancer survivor
  •     Grief and bereavement issues
  •     Life after cancer issues

About the Library

The Josephine Field Davidson Cancer Resource Library is staffed by trained volunteers who help consumers find answers to their questions about cancer. The volunteers can also refer those in search of medical texts and current journal articles to the main Halifax Health Medical Center Medical Library.

The Cancer Resource Library provides consumers with carefully selected information that will help them make informed decisions about their health care. It encompasses a variety of viewpoints, some of which may be controversial. Inclusion of materials in the library does not imply approval or recommendation.

The Cancer Resource Library receives support from gifts and donations made by individuals, community organizations and businesses. Contributions are tax-deductible and help maintain the collection of materials, upgrade equipment, and enhance our ability to serve the community. To find out how you can help, please call the Halifax Health – Foundation at 386.425.4111. Persons interested in volunteering at the Library may call 386.425.4036.
