Lowell and Nancy Lohman have donated $100,000 to Halifax Health – Foundation and the Volusia County Division of the Help A Diabetic Child Foundation to promote diabetes awareness and management through a symposium and monthly community outreach series. DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – (February 20, 2019) – Lowell and Nancy Lohman of Ormond Beach have donated $100,000 to Halifax Health – Foundation and the Volusia County Division of the Help A Diabetic Child Foundation for the coordination of a diabetes symposium featuring world-renowned experts and a monthly community outreach series at Halifax Health|YMCA Healthy Living Centers in Volusia County.
“Nancy and I continually hear of requests for financial and volunteer assistance for all kinds of disease initiatives, but we always wondered who was helping families with diabetes,” says Lowell Lohman, who, along with his brother Victor, has type 1 diabetes.
Lohman and his family are concerned by the increasing expense and education needs of Volusia County children with diabetes. While reading the paper one day, he saw a small article that grabbed his attention. It promoted an event being hosted by the Volusia County Division of the Help A Diabetic Child Foundation (HADC) to raise money for test strips, insulin and other supplies for local youth with diabetes.
“That small article had a profound effect on me because it was for local children. Also, I know supplies for diabetes can be very expensive and can cost as much as $10,000 a year,” Lowell explains.
Lowell and his wife Nancy soon met with Cheryl Jenkins, director of the Volusia County Division of HADC, and her local board members, to learn more about the organization which was founded in South Florida in 2013 by Tami and Joe Balavage, parents of a 16-year-old child diagnosed in 2010 with type 1 diabetes. Jenkins, a local realtor who also lives with type 1 diabetes, is founder of the Volusia County Division of HADC.
“The generosity of The Lohman Family has given us a huge jumpstart in establishing the Volusia Division of HADC,” Jenkins says.
To date, The Lohman Family has donated $75,000 to HADC and has brought Halifax Health into the planning of a diabetes symposium featuring world-renowned experts. The symposium is scheduled to take place Sunday, November 17, 2019 at the Port Orange YMCA.
In addition, Halifax Health|YMCA Healthy Living Centers in Volusia County will be offering a diabetes outreach series that will be held monthly, rotating between Healthy Living Center locations.
These events will be free to the public and will offer a variety of topics and services to assist with healthy living habits, and more specifically, type 1 diabetes management.
With their recent donations to both Halifax Health – Foundation and HADC, in total, The Lohmans have donated $100,000 to promote diabetes awareness and management in Volusia County.
