DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – (November 2, 2018) – Elizabeth Murphy, a certified therapeutic recreation specialist, has been named the coordinator of the Halifax Health|Brooks Rehabilitation Adaptive Sports, Recreation and Wellness programs.
A recognized leader in providing a system of world-class rehabilitation solutions, Jacksonville, Fla.-based Brooks Rehabilitation offers the most comprehensive adaptive sports and recreation programs in the United States. As the coordinator for local programs, Murphy oversees the weekly activities in the Daytona Beach area which currently include: on-water rowing, ergometer rowing, bowling and billiards, with yoga and boccia expected to be added in the near future. Special event activities include: fishing, adaptive cycling, surfing, horseback riding, golf, water skiing and a bowling tournament. Both recreational and competitive opportunities are available.
“What many people do not know about this community program is that there is no charge for these activities and they are open to participants of all ages with physical disabilities,” Murphy explains, adding, “No experience in performing these activities is required for participants as equipment and instruction are provided.”
In addition, Murphy is charged with coordinating wellness programs focused on fitness and education, with an emphasis on stroke wellness, in partnership with the Volusia-Flagler Family YMCA.
Murphy is a graduate of Clemson University in South Carolina where she received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in recreational therapy. Her experience in working with persons with disabilities includes an internship with the Lakeshore Foundation – a Paralympic training facility in Birmingham, Ala. – and implementation of an international adaptive sports training program in Thailand.
“One of my goals is to make more people, with and without disabilities, more aware of opportunities for individuals with disabilities. I also hope to help those with disabilities rise above stereotypes and live healthy and independent lifestyles. I believe changing traditional attitudes towards disability is imperative in ridding society of stigmas, and the activities we are offering through these programs are steps in the right direction,” Murphy says.
