Child & Adolescent Behavioral Services

Healing starts here.

As the area’s only comprehensive center, we provide psychiatric services for children and adolescents (ages 2-17) with emotional and behavioral problems.

As a part of your child’s treatment, our primary goal is to provide a safe, therapeutic environment at all times.

Halifax Health – Behavioral Services team works to establish healthy behavior by working with the child to learn new skills, socially and emotionally, and then by reinforcing positive feedback and encouragement for a smoother transition back into the home, family, school and their community.

What We Offer

Halifax Health has a treatment philosophy that centers on four main concepts:

Holistic View of Individuals

A holistic view starts with the process of self-knowledge.  This process is the connection of mental and physical health and how they work together to achieve overall health and well being.

Treatment Team Approach

The Interdisciplinary Treatment Team is at the core of the treatment program. Patients are assessed by individual disciplines (i.e., physicians, nurses, social workers, recreation therapies, etc) who then coordinate treatment planning, goal setting and treatment implementation with the patient. Each team member that impacts a patient’s recovery has input into the treatment planning process.

Eclectic Treatment Approach

Treatment is individualized and various interventions are utilized to assure the most positive results.

Patient and Family Involvement

Patients and families are provided with many opportunities to give their input and opinion as the most important member of the treatment team. They are strongly encouraged to take active role in the treatment.

Our Community Action Team provides comprehensive, intensive community-based treatment to families with young children and young adults, ages 11-21, who are at risk of out of-home placement due to a mental health condition, co-occurring disorder or related complex issues for whom traditional services have not been adequate.

Youth

The Jason Foundation

The Jason Foundation, Inc. (JFI) is dedicated to the prevention of the “Silent Epidemic” of youth suicide through educational and awareness programs that equip young people, educators/youth workers and parents with the tools and resources to help identify and assist at-risk youth.

JFI believes that awareness and education are the first steps to prevention. We want to establish a Triangle of Prevention by providing students, parents and teachers the tools and resources to help identify and help at-risk youth. This is accomplished through a curriculum unit for students and informational seminars for teachers and parents. The programs provide resources to accomplish this goal.

BeginAgain Children’s Grief Center

Provides free services to bereaved children ages 4-18 and their families providing both individual counseling groups. Must call to schedule for services and orientation. Please call 386-425-3100.

Compassionate Friends

The Compassionate Friends was founded over 40 years ago when a chaplain at the Warwickshire Hospital in England brought together two sets of grieving parents and realized that the support they gave each other was better than anything he, as a chaplain, could ever say or provide. Meeting around a kitchen table, the Lawleys and the Hendersons were joined by a bereaved mother and the chaplain, Simon Stephens, and The Society of the Compassionate Friends was born. The Compassionate Friends jumped across the ocean and was established in the United States and incorporated in 1978 in Illinois.

Each chapter, along with the supporting National Office, is committed to helping every bereaved parent, sibling, or grandparent who may walk through our doors or contact us. The Volusia/Flagler chapter can be found here: https://www.compassionatefriends.org/chapter/volusiaflagler-chapter/

Sandy Hook Promise

Volusia County Schools entered a partnership with Sandy Hook Promise this year to offer three specific programs.

  • Say Something – Say Something teaches adults and youth how to recognize the signs and signals from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or to others. This is an evidenced based program developed in collaboration with leading violence prevision researchers and educators.
  • Signs of Suicide (SOS) – Signs of Suicide teaches youth, educators and administrators how to identify, intervene and get help for youth who may be depressed or suicidal.
  • Safety and Intervention (SAI) – Safety and Intervention teaches adults in schools and youth organization how to identify, assess and respond to threats of violence or at-risk behavior BEFORE a tragedy takes place. SAI not only addresses the threat itself but also helps identify and treat the underlying problem in that youth’s life that led to him/her making the threat.

Volusia County Schools have already begun implementing these three programs throughout the district and will continue the partnership in the 19-20 school year. Find out more at http://myvolusiaschools.org/security/Pages/Whats-New-in-2018-19.aspx
