Lung Care

Breathe a little easier.

Lung care in our community is very crucial as lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death, and the second leading cause of death after heart disease in Volusia County and the nation. At Halifax Health, we take early diagnosis very seriously in order to combat these startling statistics. If lung cancer is caught in its earliest stage, a patient’s survival rate increases drastically.

High Level Lung Care

Halifax Health offers a low-cost, life-saving lung cancer screening option for $125*.

The Low Dose CT lung scan provides early detection of lung cancer, even if you may not have any symptoms. Studies show that Low Dose CT scans are more effective at detecting cancerous lung masses than standard radiographic chest x-rays. Therefore, this screening technique, along with physician recommendations and treatment, can reduce the risk of death from lung cancer – the number one cause of cancer-related deaths among men and women in the nation.
*Low Dose CT lung scan may be covered by insurance. If not, out-of-pocket cost is only $125.

Who Should Get a Screening?

  • Aged 55-77
  • Is asymptomatic (they don’t have signs or symptoms of lung cancer)
  • Is either a current smoker or have quit smoking within the last 15 years
  • Has a tobacco smoking history of at least 30 “pack years” (an average of one pack a day for 30 years)
  • Have received a written order from their doctor

Ask your doctor if having a Low Dose CT lung scan is right for you.

Veran’s SPiN Thoracic Navigation

Halifax Health is the first area hospital to offer the latest breakthrough technology in early stage lung cancer diagnostics. The Veran SPiN Thoracic Navigation System allows the physician to diagnose lung cancer at its earliest stage, reaching lesions to biopsy in areas of the lung that traditional diagnostic technology cannot reach. This helps a patient avoid what is called “watchful waiting” – waiting to see growth in the lesion or development of symptoms that are indicative of cancer.

Patient Benefits:

  • Potential earlier diagnosis of lung cancer allows for earlier treatment
  • Earlier treatment is proven to increase survival rates to as high as 92%
  • Less anxiety than “watchful waiting”
  • Allows for diagnosing and staging lung cancer in one outpatient procedure
