Mary’s Story – Emergency Open Heart Surgery

Mary was 53 when she experienced a major heart attack. Living an active lifestyle with her husband, while eating healthier food options and having no history of smoking, this is an event she never expected to happen to her.

Mary was 53 when she experienced a major heart attack. Living an active lifestyle with her husband, while eating healthier food options and having no history of smoking, this is an event she never expected to happen to her.

Fortunately, Mary was brought into Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida and was able to receive emergency open heart bypass surgery from Dr. Cary Meyers, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon through UF Health Heart & Vascular Surgery at Halifax Health. This is a collaboration between UF Health and Halifax Health, that provides our community with expert care close to home.

As heart disease is the number one cause of death in women, Mary’s hope is that her story will help prevent this from happening to as many people as possible. Mary feels that if she would have been going regularly to a primary care physician, this is something that could have been prevented – but is so thankful that the expert care she needed, through Dr. Meyers and the Surgical Team at Halifax Health, saved her life.
