Beating Heart (Off-Pump) Bypass Surgery
Proficiency in Off-Pump Heart Bypass Surgery
The UF Health Heart Surgery Program at Halifax Health is the only heart program in East Central Florida that is actively performing off-pump heart bypass surgery (also known as beating heart surgery). Off-pump is an advanced procedure that does not involve the heart-lung bypass machine. During the surgery, the heart continues beating on its own, which results in many benefits for the patient.
Surgeon Specializing in Off-Pump Heart Bypass Surgery
UF Health cardiothoracic surgeon, Sohit Khanna, MD, has specialized in off-pump heart bypass surgery for the past 17 years, making him an exceptional rarity amongst heart surgeons; only a small percentage of cardiothoracic surgeons nationwide perform this surgery routinely and effectively. With Dr. Khanna now residing at Halifax Health through the UF Health Heart Surgery Program, patients in our area can rest assured they are in the hands of an expert surgeon.
Benefits of Off-Pump Heart Bypass Surgery
Forty-nine percent of our heart bypass patients received the benefits of off-pump surgery compared to the 12% average of other heart programs nationwide.*
The benefits of off-pump heart bypass surgery include:
- Lower risk of stroke and other major complications
- Decreased need for blood transfusion
- Lower risk of kidney issues
- Faster recovery
Patients requiring the on-pump procedure also see positive results with the UF Health surgeons, however, any chance for a patient to go off-pump is recommended since all physiologic functions of the body stay intact allowing the body to respond more naturally to the surgery.
The UF Health cardiothoracic surgeons examine each patient prior to any surgical decision and make a recommendation on which surgery is ideal for them.
Our Precision is Seen in the Results
It has been recognized that both our on-pump and off-pump heart bypass surgeries have provided patients with major benefits during and post-surgery. Overall, benefits include shorter hospital stay, lower risks of complications, and less time on the ventilator post-surgery – just to name a few.
Our patients benefiting from the expertise of the UF Health cardiothoracic surgeons and surgical team has put the UF Health Heart Surgery Program at Halifax Health in the top 10% of all heart programs in the nation.
