If you have a particular concern about breast cancer, breast health or want to find out more about the support available, our experts are here.  Whatever your concern, you can be confident we’ll understand the issues you might be facing, and that the information you’ll receive is clear and up-to-date.

Calls are answered by trained and caring staff Monday – Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. During other times, please leave a message and we will do our best to return your call within 24 hours.

Clinical breast exams and screenings will be provided by community partners for those meeting eligibility requirements.

All calls are welcome – whatever the situation and background – including:

  • Women and men with breast lumps, changes or breast health concerns
  • Friends, relatives, partners and children of people with breast cancer questions
  • Healthcare professionals

Halifax Health provides this FREE navigation service to save lives by detecting cancer early. The information provided is not a substitute for professional counseling or medical advice. All calls are confidential.

1. Know Your Risk

  • Talk to your family to learn about your family health history
  • Talk to your physician about your personal risk of breast cancer

2. Get Screened

  • Ask your physician which screening tests are right for you
  • Have a mammogram yearly starting at age 40, if you are at average risk
  • Have a clinical breast exam at least every 3 years starting at age 20

3. Know What is Normal For You

See your healthcare provider if you notice any of these
breast changes:

  • Lump, hard knot or thickening inside the breast or
    underarm area
  • Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast
  • Change in breast size or shape
  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin
  • Itchy, scaly sore or rash on skin
  • Nipple pulling to one side or a different direction
  • Breast pain in one spot that does not go away
  • Nipple discharge

4. Make Healthy Choices

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Exercise regularly
  • Limit alcohol intake
  • Limit menopausal hormone use
  • Breastfeed, if possible
