Halifax Health – Sports Medicine Fellowship provides a well-rounded, multi-disciplinary approach to fellowship education. Our fellowship is involved with Halifax Health Family Medicine Residency, and our fellow has the opportunity to teach residents on musculoskeletal topics in didactics and hands-on workshops.

Halifax Health – Sports Medicine Fellowship curriculum provides experience in our musculoskeletal clinic as well as with community preceptors in PM&R sports medicine, musculoskeletal radiology, podiatry, orthopedic surgery and concussion evaluation and management.

What We Offer

Halifax Health – Sports Medicine Fellowship Program has been ACGME accredited and involved in the Daytona Beach community since 1997.  The fellowship is a 1 year, PGY-4 position open to graduates of ACGME-accredited residency programs in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Emergency Medicine.  Halifax Health – Sports Medicine Fellowship Program has a strong community feel with ties to Bethune-Cookman University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and Daytona State College.  Graduates of the Sports Medicine Fellowship are eligible to sit for the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine upon completion.

We follow a dedicated musculoskeletal ultrasound curriculum to provide our sports fellow with a longitudinal experience in the use of the musculoskeletal ultrasound as well as a board preparation lecture series in anticipation of sitting for the CAQ in Sports Medicine through the ABFM.

Halifax Health – Sports Medicine Fellowship curriculum provides experience in our musculoskeletal clinic as well as with community preceptors in PM&R sports medicine, musculoskeletal radiology, podiatry, orthopedic surgery, and concussion evaluation and management. Event coverage includes Division I football with Bethune-Cookman University; Division II lacrosse with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University; professional baseball with the Daytona Tortugas (High-A Affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds); endurance events such as the Tomoka Marathon – and many more opportunities throughout the year!

The program director for Halifax Health – Sports Medicine Fellowship is Sally Hinman, MD, PhD, CAQ-SM.  Dr. Hinman has been working with this fellowship program since 2019 and became the program director in 2022.

Program

  • Halifax Health – Sports Medicine Fellowship participates in the ERAS application system in preparation for the NRMP Match.
  • All applications must be submitted through ERAS on or before October 31, 2022
  • Rank List due December 14, 2022
  • Match Day is January 11, 2023

All applications are reviewed by the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program Director and faculty.

Halifax Health offers both on-site and virtual interview options for applicants. On-site applicants will be offered a hotel room on the evening prior to the interview as well as the opportunity to be taken out to dinner with the current Sports Fellow. On-site applicants will also be given a tour of the facilities and get the opportunity to meet the athletic training staff they may be working with. Virtual applicants will be offered an interview through the Zoom platform.

Halifax Health – Sports Medicine Fellowship follows a one-year longitudinal curriculum with experiences in primary care MSK clinic, orthopedics, podiatry, MSK radiology, PM&R sports medicine, concussion evaluation and management, and multiple training rooms.  The sports fellow will get a hands-on experience in patient evaluation and care with progressive autonomy throughout the year.  The MSK US curriculum is reviewed early in the year and utilized in both standardized and clinical settings during the year.  The sports fellow is also involved in a lecture series and journal club on various MSK topics in preparation to sit for the CAQ in Sports Medicine upon completion of the fellowship.

Daytona Tortugas

Halifax Health is proud to be the Official Healthcare Provider of the Daytona Tortugas, a Minor League Affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. The Tortugas play at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, an historic baseball park and home to the professional debut of Jackie Robinson.  Halifax Sports Medicine has provided home game medical coverage to the Daytona Tortugas since 2015.

Bethune-Cookman University

Bethune-Cookman University is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and is a NCAA Division I FCS program.  The school sponsors football, basketball, baseball/softball, cross country, track and volleyball annually with the Halifax Health Sports Medicine Fellowship managing the care of 400 athletes. The school’s marching band, known as The Pride of the Wildcats, has over 300 members and is a fixture in the HBCU band culture, culminating its season in the Battle of the Bands held before the Florida Classic – an annual rivalry football game held between Bethune-Cookman University and Florida A&M University at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is the largest accredited university system specializing in aviation and aerospace in the US.  It was founded in 1926 as the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation and has grown into an NCAA Division II program participating in the Sunshine State Conference. Embry-Riddle fields teams in lacrosse, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, cross country, track and field, soccer, tennis, and golf. The Halifax Health Sports Medicine Fellowship manages over 500 athletes every year with Embry-Riddle Athletics.

Required Coverage: Cross Country Invitational, lacrosse (men's and women's home games), soccer (select home games) and training rooms (twice weekly)

Daytona State College

Daytona State College competes in the National Junior College Association (NJCAA) as part of the Mid-Florida Conference. Daytona State fields teams in basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, softball, cross country, and golf. The Halifax Health Sports Medicine Fellowship provides medical care for over 200 athletes at Daytona State.

Required Coverage: No required events. Athletes seen in Sports Medicine Clinic weekly.

Tomoka Marathon

The Tomoka Marathon is an annual Boston Marathon qualifier with >2000 athletes participating in the 5K, half marathon, and full marathon in Ormond Beach, FL. The fellow learns mass event planning as the Co-Medical Director of this event.

Sally Hinman, M.D., Ph.D., C.A.Q.S.M., has been named Director of Halifax Health – Sports Medicine Fellowship. Dr. Hinman completed the Medical Scientist Training Program at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Ind., where she earned a Ph.D. in Cellular and Integrative Physiology.

Dr. Hinman is a graduate of the Community Health and Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla., and the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program the at University of South Florida/Morton Plant Mease in Clearwater, Fla. She has covered large-scale sporting events including teams at the high school, college and professional levels.

Dr. Hinman joined the core faculty for the Halifax Health Sports Medicine Fellowship and Halifax Health Family Medicine Residency in 2019. She became the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program Director in 2022. Her professional interests include ultrasound-guided procedures and teaching. In her free time, she enjoys going to the beach with her husband and children.

Dennis Wen is the Associate Program Director at Halifax Health – Sports Medicine Fellowship.

Dr. Wen was most recently an associate professor of Clinical Family and Community Medicine at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. He has also served as an assistant fellowship director for a sports medicine fellowship program and a team physician for the University of Missouri. Dr. Wen is a graduate of Duke University and received his medical degree from East Carolina University, both in North Carolina.

Dr. Kyle Correll is a native of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania who graduated Magna Cum Laude from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a minor in Spanish. Dr. Correll earned his MD from University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in the SELECT Program, which focused on healthcare improvement and leadership. He completed his medical training at the Halifax Health Family Medicine Residency Program and completed an additional year of training at Halifax Health through the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship.

While in residency he completed both the Healthcare Disparities and Sports Medicine tracts and served as a Primary Care physician in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was graciously awarded the Nurses Award for the Caring Physician and the Dr. Y.B. Au Yeung Award for Excellence in Pediatrics. He currently works as a bilingual Sports Medicine Physician with Florida Health Care Plans (FHCP), a 5-star Health Plan recognized by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. He remains active in teaching residents and fellows within the Halifax Family and Sports Medicine Programs and finds educating physicians to be extremely rewarding. Among some of his professional aspirations, he aspires to be a team physician within the Major League Baseball (MLB) association and be a catalyst for change within healthcare. Personally, Dr. Correll enjoys staying active, traveling and spending quality time with family and friends.

MD, CAQSM

Brent N. Fulton, MD, is a graduate of Bowman Gray/Wake Forest School of Medicine. He completed his family medicine residency and sports medicine fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy where he earned a degree in Ocean Engineering. Dr. Fulton served in the United States Navy as a special operations officer before attending medical school. He is currently in a private sports medicine and orthopedic rehabilitation practice in Daytona Beach, FL. He has special interests in acupuncture, spine rehabilitation, medical exercise and water/endurance/action sports injuries.

Dr. Gil Vega was born and raised in Puerto Rico prior to moving to Orlando, FL at a young age. His passion for health, exercise and fitness led him to become a personal trainer during his undergraduate years. He graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science prior to continuing his education at Florida International University, graduating with a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy. Dr. Vega practiced as a Physical Therapist for almost 8 years before following his dreams of becoming a physician. After graduating from medical school, he completed his Family Medicine residency at AdventHealth Winter Park Family Medicine program in Winter Park, Florida. He is excited to continue to pursue his true passion in sports medicine at Halifax Health.

Outside of medicine, he is an avid fitness enthusiast who prides himself in his home gym. He also enjoys watching Florida Gator Football as well as spending time with his wife and daughter.
