Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

UF Health Heart & Vascular Surgery at Halifax Health offers coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), which many have come to know as open-heart or heart bypass surgery. Bypass surgery may be needed when someone needs a new route, or bypass, so that the blood and oxygen is still able to flow through their body and reach their heart. The surgery is performed when there are partial or full blockages that are preventing your heart from receiving an adequate blood supply.  When your heart is not getting enough blood, it is in a state of ischemic heart disease, also called coronary heart disease, which can lead to chest pain.

Bypass surgery has helped improve blood flow to the heart in millions of people around the country, as well as many people local to Volusia, Flagler and Brevard counties. UF Health Heart & Vascular Surgery offers both off-pump and on-pump heart bypass surgery.

With approximately 61% of our heart bypass surgeries being performed off-pump, this is a more advanced procedure that does not use the heart-lung machine. During this surgery, the heart stays beating on its own throughout the procedure. It’s a surgery option that reduces hospital stay, is more cost effective, and helps to avoid blood transfusions.

This is the traditional route of doing heart bypass surgery. During this procedure, the heart is stopped and the person is connected to a heart-lung machine that does the work of the heart, supplying the body with blood and oxygen, while removing carbon dioxide.

Both heart bypass surgery options include a surgical graft being made, where the doctor will take a vein from another part of the body, such as the leg, and will use it to create the bypass, giving the blood a new way around the blocked artery. Both surgeries are performed at Halifax Health, and take 4-6 hours to complete. The UF Health board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon, will make a recommendation as to which type of surgery is ideal for each person.

We can’t live without a healthy heart, so if yours it not where it should be, we can help. With our relationship with UF Health, we have brought a world-class team to the area who are experts in the heart bypass surgery field.
