Melanie VanDemark, MD, ABOM, FAAFP, earned her medical degree from Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. She completed her family medicine residency at Halifax Health - Family Medicine Residency Program where she served as chief resident. She was awarded Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and became a fellow of the American Board of Obesity Medicine in 2016. Dr. VanDemark subsequently completed a Health Equity Fellowship with the AAFP in 2022.
Upon residency graduation, she opened a private family medicine practice in DeLand, FL where she served her community for 14 years. After providing broad-spectrum family medical care to her patients, Dr. VanDemark returned to academic medicine at Halifax Health - Family Medicine Residency Program in 2017. She also serves as an FSU Clinical Assistant Professor, teaching medical students from the FSU COM Daytona Beach campus.
Dr. VanDemark is the Program Director for the Halifax Health - Family Medicine Residency Program. Her role allows her to innovate and advance family medicine residency education and the healthcare system. She is passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare education and leadership and how this, and social determinants of health, impact patients. Dr. VanDemark endeavors to continue this residency program’s legacy of providing residents with robust, full-scope family medicine training in a supportive and collegial environment.
As part of the faculty, Dr. VanDemark focuses on educating residents on substance use disorder, LGBTQ health, healthcare disparities and social determinants of health, practice management, and obesity medicine.
Dr. VanDemark recognizes the importance of organized medicine and advocacy as part of the role of a family physician. She is actively involved in the Florida Academy of Family Physicians and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
She is married with four children, two dogs, three kitties, and a horse. Dr. VanDemark loves cooking, enjoying great wine, a good book, and entertaining friends and family.
