Shawyntee Mayo, MD, MPH, is one of the few preventive pediatric cardiologists in Florida. She specializes in reducing the risk of heart disease in children by identifying and managing factors such as high blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol. Dr. Mayo is board-certified in both pediatrics and pediatric cardiology.
She earned her Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees from New York Medical College in Valhalla, N.Y. Dr. Mayo completed her pediatric residency and pediatric cardiology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., followed by an additional year of clinical research training at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Today, she serves as a pediatric cardiologist at University of Florida Health.
Dr. Mayo has worked extensively with the American Heart Association (AHA). In 2019, she expanded her contributions nationally when she was nominated to the Committee on Atherosclerosis, Hypertension, and Obesity in the Young (AHOY), serving two consecutive terms. In addition to her time on the AHOY committee, she co-authored several national guideline papers for the AHA.
She is passionate about community service and is an active member of several national service organizations, including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is also a member of the Northeast Florida Medical Society and the Association of Black Cardiologists Preventive Cardiology Committee.
Dr. Mayo is a highly sought-after speaker on pediatric preventive cardiology at local and national events. Outside of work, she enjoys traveling and exercising, as well as attending her son’s fencing matches and basketball games with her husband.
