DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – (April 3, 2017) – The University of Florida Health Heart Surgery Program at Halifax Health is among the top 10 percent of heart programs in the nation according to data recently released by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, a non-profit organization that represents more than 7,000 surgeons, researchers and healthcare professionals worldwide.

The rating is based on the performance of the UF Health cardiothoracic surgeons and Halifax Health surgical team during heart bypass surgery as well as post-surgery indicators that have been determined to provide the best outcomes for patients.

“We are extremely pleased with the development and the quality of this program.  In just its first year, it achieved the highest quality rating possible, three stars, for Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) outcomes by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.  That is a very big deal and extremely important to the health of our community,” explains Halifax Health Service Line Administrator Matt Petkus.

STS has developed a comprehensive rating system for the quality of coronary bypass surgery among hospitals across the United States.  Approximately 12 to 15 percent of hospitals receive a “three-star” rating, which denotes the highest category of quality.  In the most recent analysis of national data covering the period from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016, the coronary artery bypass surgery performance of Halifax Health, and its collaboration with UF Health, was found to lie in the highest quality tier, thereby receiving an STS three-star rating.

The data used was based on the following:

  • What procedure the surgeon performed
  • Whether patients survived the surgery
  • What complications, if any, occurred to the patient during or after the surgery
  • What medications were provided before and after surgery to the patient to ensure the best possible outcomes

“This recognition shows that our collaboration with UF Health to bring to East Central Florida advanced thoracic, cardiovascular and vascular surgical care led by board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeons has been hugely successful.  So much so, in fact, that we look forward to adding to the list of surgical procedures we offer in the near future,” Petkus says.
