1920

1925   

·         Florida Legislature created the Halifax Hospital Taxing District authorizing construction and operation of a public hospital.  $750,000 in bonds were issued. Hospital was completed in 1927.

 

January 2, 1928

·         Halifax District Hospital official dedication was held.  Hospital opened with 125 beds (40 of which were private) with surgical and obstetrical facilities, children’s wing, outpatient department and a 22-member nursing staff (find picture of MDs & Nurses)

 

January 3, 1928

·         First patient admitted

 

January 7, 1928

·         First baby born (Joan Alice Merrill)

1930

May 31, 1932

·         Women’s Auxiliary organized to support the hospital during the Great Depression, providing equipment, linens, and charity care (find picture of Women’s Auxiliary)

 

February 9, 1935

·         Stillman family donated 125 acres of land for future hospital expansion west of Lakeshore Drive (later replaced with Clyde Morris Boulevard)

 

1937

·         Halifax Hospital rated among the best in Florida and the South, remaining on the

Accredited List of the American College of Surgeons

 

1940

1940

·         Hospital reported its first profit ($6,197) enabling improvements like an air-conditioned operating room

 

1942 – 1945 WWII Period – confirm war time bullet points below

·         The Government leased the hospital and designated it as the US Army WAAC Training Center and later used it as Welch Convalescent Hospital.  During this time, a hotel building at 624 South Atlantic Avenue served as the District Hospital.

·         The hospital purchased the Robert Wendell Hotel on Atlantis Avenue for use as the “civilian” facility and the Obstetrics Department moved into temporary quarters on Broadway Street (now International Speedway Boulevard)

·         Halifax operated 3 separate facilities during the war, including the Robert Wendell Hotel and an annex on Second Avenue.

·         Women’s auxiliary provided black out curtains and linens and organized fundraising events to support wartime operations

 

1947

·         The facility was returned to Halifax District Hospital following the Army’s use once renovations were completed

1950

1951

·         16-bed mental health unit was added to the hospital south of the 1928 building

 

1954

·         First floor North Wing and the first floor South Wing  were completed (this floor was east of the 1928 building).  These wings increased bed capacity to 227 beds and 30 bassinets

 

1957

·         Community growth prompted major hospital expansion program to meet increasing medical services demands

·         State appropriated $4 million for medically indigent care

·         Second and third floor were added onto the North Wing  (when were the second and third floors added to the East wing leading to the Central 4 floors)

·         Orthopedic wing constructed, adding 28 beds and bringing total capacity to 257 beds and 30 bassinets

·         Women’s auxiliary reorganized as the ‘Pink Ladies’ launching volunteer services to assist hospital departments

1960

1962

·         Agreement with Daytona Beach Junior College established a 3-year Associate Degree Nursing Program, enrolling 50 students in its first class

 

1963

·         The four-floor Central Tower opened adding 108 beds

·         Completion of new East Wing, adding 108 beds and expanding operating, recovery, and diagnostic facilities (fully paid for with taxes, grants, and donations)

 

1966

·         Intensive Medical Care Unit opened as one of the first of its kind in the Southeast

 

 

1967

·         New five-story East Wing  was completed which added a modern 50-bed mental health unit, a 200-seat auditorium and 190 beds

 

1968

·         Surgical Intensive Care Unit opened, the second of its kind in the country and a prototype for progressive care through the United States

1969

·         Family Medicine Residency Program was established

1970

1970

·         The Rehabilitation Center opened for inpatients and outpatients, as the only comprehensive rehabilitation unit in a hospital in this area

 

1971

·         Halifax Family Medicine Residency Program was accredited

 

1973

·         Sixth & Seventh Floors of the East Tower opened, including a 26-bed Pediatric Unit

 

1976

·         Floors eight through ten of the East Tower opened

 

1977

·         Nine-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit opened

 

1979

·         Hospice of Volusia was established to provide care to terminally il patients and their families (SEE HOSPICE BUBBLE)

1980

1980

·         Ron R. Rees was named hospital Administrator

 

1983

·         Port Orange Urgent Care Center opened (1041 Dunlawton Ave., Port Orange)

 

1984

·         Regional Oncology Center opened as one of the largest outpatient community cancer centers in the southeast (ONCOLOGY BUBBLE)

 

1986

·         Hospital was designated as the areas only Level II Trauma Center

·         Hospice of Volusia expanded its service area to include Flagler County  (HOSPICE BUBBLE)

 

1987

·         Regional Oncology center opened the Halifax Oncology Satellite in Ormond Beach (ONCOLOGY BUBBLE) – where was this located?

 

1988

·         Halifax Medical Center Foundation was established

1990

1991

·         Halifax Psychiatric Center opened a 16-bed adult unit on the seventh floor of East (Fountain) Tower

 

1992

·         Halifax Partial Hospitalization Program was established to help children ages 5 to 18 who suffer from emotional or behavioral problems  (what location – Jimmy Ann?) Yes

·         Halifax Specialty Center opened providing cardiovascular, pulmonary, and neurology services in one centralized area on the second floor of the initial east connector to the central tower

 

1994

·         Halifax Medical Center purchased Atlantic Shores Hospital and renamed it Halifax Behavioral Services, bringing the total number of beds to 590

·         The 201 Building opened as an outpatient facility housing the Pain Management Center, the Endoscopy Center, the Rehab Center, and the OB/GYN Center

·         Halifax Medical Center Port Orange (Dunlawton Avenue) outpatient facility opened housing urgent care,  laboratory, diagnostic radiology, family health center, endoscopy center, and same day surgery

·         NOTES FROM JACOB NAGIB:  November 1994 – opened state of the art 19 surgical rooms and 29 PACU positions on 3rd floor.  Started planning for the most comprehensive interventional cardiovascular unit on the 2nd floor (with 2 rooms dedicated to EP lats and 14 bed positions for recovery.  Contact Radiology/IR team for additional information on modernizations and state-of-the-art equipment/procedures that we have.

 

1995

·         Halifax Medical Cener – Ormond Beach (Booth Road) opened to provide radiation and medical oncology services to patients in North Volusia County (ONCOLOGY BUBBLE).  Other services housed in the building included Halifax Urgent Care-Ormond Beach, laboratory. Radiology, EKG, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, and physician offices.

·         Hospice of Volusia/Flagler Care Center, Port Orange opened with 16 residential rooms

·         First Bone Marrow Transplant Program in Central Florida opened

 

1996

·         Spine Center opened in the 201 Building

·         The Breast Health Center at the Regional Oncology Center opened (ONCOLOGY BUBBLE)

·         Halifax Medical Center assumed operation of the Volusia County Public Health Unit on Keech Street, Daytona Beach, naming the facility Halifax Keech Health Center

 

1997

·         The State granted a Certificate of Need for Halifax Medical Center to begin an open-heart program

·         Renovations of the 4th Floor of HMC were completed in October and included three open heart operating rooms in the Surgical Suite, a 7-bed Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, and a 23-bed Cardiac Progressive Care Unit.  First open heard procedure was performed November 7th

·         Emergency Department expansion began (increasing beds from 33 to 55), including a 7-bed trauma/injury suite, an 8-bed chest pain center and a pediatric facility

·         The Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at Halifax Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (FAMILY RESIDENCY BUBBLE)

·         The first Neuroscience Center in the area opened in the 201 Building

·         New CT light-speed scanner was installed at HMC, able to perform total body trauma scans in 5 to 10 minutes

 

1999

·         Areas first Comprehensive Stroke Center opened

·         Atlantic Medical Center on Clyde Morris Boulevard was purchased and renamed Halifax Medical Center-Atlantic campus, bringing total beds to 764. 

·         Betty Jane France Pediatric Center opened following the complete renovation of the pediatric unit with a 31-bed unit in “Speediatrics” and five beds in the areas first Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

·         Halifax Urgent Care at Atlantic Medical Center opened

·         Halifax Professional Center  (Medical Office building on HHMC main campus) was purchased.

2000

2001

·         Multiple Sclerosis Care Center opened in the 201 Building

·         The Halifax Center for Advanced Imaging at Halifax Medical Center-Atlantic Campus opened featuring the first permanently installed PET scanner in Volusia County (IMAGING BUBBLE)

·         Halifax 100 Club was formed to recognize the top 100 employees based on longevity

 

 

 

 

2002

·         Conversion of Halifax Medical Center-Port Orange into a full-service 80-bed community hospital began in April

·         On November 15th, the 100,000th baby born at Halifax Medical Center was delivered

 

2004  

·         Halifax Heart Center expands to include four new state-of-the-art catheterization labs, echocardiology, integrated cardiac PACS network, Diagnostic Outpatient Cardiac Unit (DOCU), and Cardiac Intermediate Care Unit (CICU) with 45 inpatient beds and 17 DOCU holding beds.

·         East Central Florida Outpatient Imaging (ECFOI) partnership with Radiology Imaging Associates formed.  Initial sites were Twin Lakes Imaging, Port Orange imaging, Palm Coast Parkway Imaging, and Palm Coast Town Center Imaging.  Additonal sites added included St. Augustine Imaging, Port Orange Belvedere Medical Imaging, Medical Center of Deltona Imaging (MCD Annex building), and New Smyrna Beach Imaging,

 

2005

·         Jeff Feasel became President and CEO of Halifax Community Health System

 

2006

·         Agency for Health Care Administration approved Halifax Medical Center for a Certificate of Need for a kidney transplant program

·         Halifax Medical Center became the first hospital in Florida to be designated as aa Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Agency for Healthcare Administration

·         Plans to build a new 10-story inpatient tower and emergency department on the Daytona Beach campus was announced

·         Halifax Hospital Port Orange opens its full service 80-bed community hospital in December

 

2007

·         HHMC 10-Story France Tower (North Tower) Groundbreaking (include photo with Governor Christ)

 

2009

·         The HHMC France Tower, 10-story inpatient building opens

·         Halifax Health implements electronic medical records

2010

2013

·         Halifax Health partners with| Brooks Rehabilitation and the Halifax Health | Brooks Rehabilitation  – Center for Inpatient Rehabilitation opens on the Daytona Beach campus

·         24-hour Obstetrical Emergency Department opens on HHMC DB campus

·         Purchase of Twin Lakes Surgery Center

 

2014

·         Children’s Medical Centers in Port Orange, Ormond Beach & Palm Coast join Halifax Health

 

2015

·         Halifax Health established partnership with University of Florida to launch cardiovascular surgery network (UF BUBBLE)

·         Halifax Health – Hospice Ormond Beach Care Center opens (HOSPICE BUBBLE)

·         Halifax Health – Hospice expands to Orange & Osceola Counties (HOSPICE BUBBLE)

 

2016

·         HHMC becomes first trauma center in the state to offer the advanced scanning capabilities of GE Healthcare’s Revolution CT (TECHNOLOGY BUBBLE)

·         Betty Jane France Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit  at Halifax Health expansion completed, expanding NICU from 9 to 14 beds

·         Groundbreaking for Deltona Free Standing Emergency Department

 

2017
