UF Health Heart & Vascular Surgery at Halifax Health specializes in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), or heart bypass surgery. This procedure establishes a new route for blood and oxygen when blockages impede natural flow, addressing issues like ischemic heart disease. The center offers both off-pump and on-pump heart bypass surgeries, benefiting individuals nationwide and locally in Volusia, Flagler, and Brevard counties.
With approximately 61% of our heart bypass surgeries being performed off-pump, this is a more advanced procedure that does not use the heart-lung machine. During this surgery, the heart stays beating on its own throughout the procedure. It’s a surgery option that reduces hospital stay, is more cost effective, and helps to avoid blood transfusions.
This is the traditional route of doing heart bypass surgery. During this procedure, the heart is stopped and the person is connected to a heart-lung machine that does the work of the heart, supplying the body with blood and oxygen, while removing carbon dioxide.
Both heart bypass surgery options include a surgical graft being made, where the doctor will take a vein from another part of the body, such as the leg, and will use it to create the bypass, giving the blood a new way around the blocked artery. Both surgeries are performed at Halifax Health, and take 4-6 hours to complete. The UF Health board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon, will make a recommendation as to which type of surgery is ideal for each person.
We can’t live without a healthy heart, so if yours it not where it should be, we can help.
