Women's Health Fellowship

Women's Health Fellowship

Where women's health is our priority.

The Halifax Health – Women’s Health Fellowship focuses on teaching advanced women’s health and obstetrical medicine to family physicians who want to provide full-spectrum care for their patients. Our fellows work closely with the FMOB faculty as well as our OB/GYN colleagues on Labor and Delivery and throughout the Daytona Beach community.

Meet Our Doctors

The Women’s Health Fellowship curriculum provides experience in surgical obstetrics, prenatal and post-partum care, office-based gynecologic procedures, and development of leadership and teaching skills as our fellows work closely with our Family Medicine residents and medical students.

Fellows are eligible to sit for the American Board of Physician Specialties (APBS) Family Medicine Obstetrics board certification exam.

What We Offer

  • The Halifax Health Women’s Health Fellowship was created in 2023. The fellowship is a 1 year, PGY-4 position open to American Board of Family Medicine Certified physicians. We currently have one fellow each academic year. Fellows in our program work closely with our FMOB faculty and OB/GYNs in the Daytona Beach community. Our Labor and Delivery unit is staffed by OB/GYN hospitalists 24 hours a day, giving our fellows every opportunity to discuss intrapartum management and perform vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections. Fellows are anticipated to complete a minimum of one hundred Cesarean sections as primary surgeons. In the office, fellows provided evidence-based, patient-centered care to low, moderate, and high-risk obstetric patients.

Outside of obstetrical care, the curriculum also includes opportunities for training in colposcopy, LEEP, endometrial biopsy, IUD and Nexplanon insertion and removal, dilation and curettage, postpartum tubal ligation, and circumcision.

We believe providing full-spectrum family medicine care is the best way to support our underserved patient population. Our fellows have their own Family Medicine clinics, precept our Family Medicine residents in the outpatient setting, and act as the attending for our inpatient medicine and pediatric services. This also allows our fellows to develop their academic leadership skills should they choose to pursue a career in academics after fellowship.

Our fellowship program director, Julie Degele, MD, MPH, completed her undergraduate education at the University of Georgia, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Genetics. She also earned her Master of Public Health at the University of Georgia. She earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and went on to complete her residency training in family medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC where she also served as Teaching Chief Resident. She then completed her Obstetrics Fellowship at Cone Health in Greensboro, NC. Before joining Halifax Health, Dr. Degele served as Core Faculty at Emory Family Medicine Residency Program in Atlanta, GA for three years. She joined us at Halifax Health - Family Medicine Residency Program in November 2022 as our Women’s Health Director. She enjoys practicing full-scope family medicine and obstetrics, including performing vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections.
