Audrey Butler earned her BS and Ph.D. in Chemical and Materials Engineering from the University of Iowa. In 1999, she joined the University of Iowa Chemical and Biochemical Engineering faculty as a lecturer. She also served as the departmental honors advisor and accreditation coordinator, guiding the program through three successful cycles and earning “exemplary report” status in 2015.
Career highlights include increasing the diversity of students participating in summer enrichment programs, revamping a core undergraduate laboratory course, and maintaining very high student satisfaction scores in all her courses.
In her current role as an ambassador for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University she participates in alumni and industry outreach activities, with a special focus on increasing diversity in STEM fields.
Volunteerism has always been an important part of her life. In addition to the Halifax Health Board of Commissioners she currently serves on the PACE Center for Girls, the Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens (OMAM) and the Community Foundation of Volusia & Flagler boards. She has also been a GED math tutor, a Cub Scout den leader and assistant Girl Scout troop leader, elementary school volunteer coordinator, PTO president and delivered Meals on Wheels for almost a decade. She is certified as an administrative official with USA Swimming, the national governing body for competitive swimming, and has trained others for certification. She has officiated at events for beginning swimmers, clubs, Big Ten conference championship meets and the NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
She is a fiber artist and one of her small pieces was featured in a digital magazine. One of her larger pieces was part of the Florida Fiber Art exhibit at OMAM and was displayed at QuiltCon 2022. She runs regularly and has completed three half marathons. Her other interests include cooking and travel. She is married to P. Barry Butler and they have three adult children.
