Education Program Overview

We will teach you self-care skills which can help you reach your health goals.

Class topics include:

  • Explanation of different types of diabetes, causes and treatments

  • Causes and treatments of high and low blood sugars

  • Nutrition and healthy eating

  • Physical activity

  • Diabetes medications

  • Testing blood sugar

  • Complications (preventing, detecting and treating)

  • Stress, depression and other behavioral health issues affected by diabetes as well as many other topics and resources

Diabetes Education services are only offered to adults, 18 years or older. To participate in a Halifax Health Diabetes Education service, a referral from your Endocrinologist or Primary Care Physician and certain medical records are required. The hospital staff can verify insurance coverage before you attend.

Diabetes Education Services

Halifax Health offers outpatient diabetes education services taught by a registered nurse and registered dietitian who are Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists. Services are tailored to each person’s needs.

The American Diabetes Association recognizes our services as meeting the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support.

Services are tailored to each person’s needs whether they are newly diagnosed or have a history of diabetes. We offer diabetes classes, one-on-one counseling, meal planning individualized by a dietitian, pregnancy/gestational diabetes counseling, instructions on how to test blood sugar or how to inject insulin and a free support group.
