Daytona Beach- Successful business couple Lowell and Nancy Lohman have made many commitments to Volusia County and the well-being and quality of life for its residents. Now the couple wants to expand their reach. In partnership with Halifax Health, the YMCA and Help A Diabetic Child they have launched the Lowell and Nancy Lohman Diabetes Prevention and Education Network.
“The goal is simple,” according to Lowell Lohman who has lived with diabetes for 55 years. “Nancy and I want to help people avoid and or manage the disease, and the best way to do that is to increase one’s knowledge on eating, exercise and generally taking care of your body.” Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States and 2.4 million people have diabetes in Florida. Approximately 10% of the residents on Volusia and Flagler County have diabetes, and the number of people with pre-diabetes is staggering.
The goal of the Lohman Diabetes Network is to reach a hand out to those with diabetes and to those in the pre-diabetes phase to empower them with resources and education to live their lives to the fullest.
“The call to action is simple,” says John Guthrie of Halifax Health, “ we need to spread the word that there is help. Halifax Health partners with many organizations to provide health education by adding virtual programming and building a database of people who are impacted by diabetes, we can help create lasting changes in peoples’ health.” To sign up for the free Lohman Diabetes Network go to www.halifaxhealth.org/diabetes
The Lohman’s have created a video explaining Lowell’s journey, secrets to managing the disease and directions to sign up for the free network to receive news, event information and resources to help in the daily struggle. The goal is to find and touch everyone with diabetes in their lives.
