Dr. Michelle Carter-Scott Donates More Than $100,000 to Halifax Health-Foundation and Even More to Local Children

The Embassy of Hope Foundation has given more than $100,000 to the Halifax Health – Foundation to support local healthcare for everyone.

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – (March 14, 2018) – Dr. Michelle Carter-Scott remembers when she was a little girl and her mother asked her to take a basket of food and blankets to their neighbor, Mrs. Brown.  She says that was when she realized people sometimes need help.  “I remember Mrs. Brown opening the door to accept the basket and when I peaked in, I saw small cots everywhere.” It turns out Mrs. Brown was taking care of 19 children.  “At that moment I realized I needed to help as many people as I could,” Dr. Carter-Scott said, and she has never forgotten that.

Dr. Carter-Scott went on to graduate from Bethune-Cookman University and become a teacher in the Volusia County School System for 21 years.  During that time, her giving back included setting expectations and helping students achieve their highest potential. She tells a story of a young man who ran into her at the mall one day and thanking her for teaching him to type because that skill was very valued in the military as a teletype operator.  Dr. Carter-Scott remembers seeing children come to school during the cold months and she would ask them why they weren’t wearing jackets.  She learned very quickly that some children didn’t have jackets and she would go to stores after work and buy them jackets. The next day when she presented them to the girls and boys, she was clear that they should wear them, take care of them and keep them clean.

Dr. Carter-Scott’s giving doesn’t end with school children.  Through their Embassy of Hope Foundation, she and her son – NBA star Vince Carter – have raised and donated more than $1 million to area organizations, and annually provide over 150 food baskets to those in need during the holidays.  Embassy of Hope also supports the Bethune-Cookman University Concert Chorale.  Dr. Carter-Scott has proudly served as a member of B-CU’s Board of Trustees since 2001 and was recently elected chairman of the board.

In addition, the Embassy of Hope Foundation has given more than $100,000 to the Halifax Health – Foundation to support local healthcare for everyone.  According to Joe Petrock, executive director of the foundation, “Michelle gives so much to our community.  She has shaped so many young people through teaching.  She and Vince have given talent and treasure to make our area a better place to live, learn, work and play.”

Whether it is holding the annual Pink Walk for breast cancer, arranging the Embassy of Hope annual gala for the past 20 years, or her work with numerous local organizations, Dr. Carter-Scott is “all in” for her community.  She leads by example and has never forgotten where she comes from and where she can make an impact.
