Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)/Forensic Nurse Program
Our Halifax Health Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)/Forensic Nurse program is comprised of 24/7 on-call, specifically trained nurses who respond quickly to provide specialty care to patients, male or female, who have been sexually assaulted or who are victims of domestic violence/intimate partner violence and/or strangulation.
Our Halifax Health SANE program offers the following at no-cost to the patient within 7 days of a sexual assault (each service is at the patient’s choice):
Assessment and documentation of injuries along with forensic photography
Potential DNA collection
Prophylactic medication
Referrals to community resources
Assistance with filing a police report (a police report is not required to receive SANE services, however)
By getting an exam soon after your assault, you have the chance to protect your health and have evidence collected which can be safely stored should you decide to report at a later time.
